Intern Employment
Introduction:
The Stephen C. O'Connell Center is a multi-purpose arena and student activity center located on the University of Florida campus in Gainesville, Florida. The mission of the Stephen C. O'Connell Center is to serve as an academic, athletic, recreational and entertainment facility. In addition, we strive to provide superior service to guests and clients, and training for future leaders while operating the Center's auxiliary as a financially self-supporting entity.
Internship Opportunities
In support of its mission, the O'Connell Center hosts two facility interns , one business intern with a marketing and special events emphasis and a second business intern with an employee relations emphasis each semester, including summers. Each of the internships offer challenging opportunities to gain event and facility management experience. The facility internships provide experience with Gator Athletics, special event planning and facility management. The business internship with a marketing and special eventsl emphasis focuses on special event management, exposition style events and event management from the fiscal and marketing perspectives. The business internship with a employee relations emphasis centers around the hiring, training and staffing practices of the University of Florida's single largest student employer.
Hours and Compensation
Generally, full-time interns (40 hours or more/week) are preferred, however part-time internships will also be considered. Due to the dynamic nature of the industry of which the O'Connell Center is a part, certain semesters may require more intensive hourly commitments. Interns are required to work additional hours on nights and weekends to gain the broadest experience possible in this field. Interns do not receive monetary compensation for their first 24 hours worked during each work week. Beyond 24 hours, interns are compensated on a contracted, hourly basis. At this time, the O'Connell Center cannot supply housing. It is the intern's responsibility to arrange for these accommodations. Likewise, transportation and parking is the responsibility of the intern. All interns are expected to follow the standards set forth by the University of Florida. For more information about parking passes, and the requirements to obtain one please visit: http://www.parking.ufl.edu/. Current University of Florida students should note their status as a student supersedes that of an intern when obtaining a parking permit.
